Does being a student make car insurance more expensive?

Generally speaking, the answer is yes. Most college and university students are under 25 and car insurance is typically more costly for this demographic. That’s because younger drivers are seen as higher risk by insurance providers.

This may feel like an unfair assumption but there is data to support the theory. A recent release from the Department for Transport revealed that 17-to-24-year-olds accounted for 17% of all driver casualties in Great Britain in 2023.

Even if you consider yourself a perfectly safe and responsible driver, providers will class you as more likely to be involved in an accident – and at a higher average claim cost – so, as a student living at or away from home, your car insurance premium is likely to be higher.

How to lower the cost of car insurance as a student: The expert's view

"As a student, trimming down your car insurance premium doesn’t have to be a mystery. Look at options like adding telematics, or a ‘black box’, which tracks safe driving which can lead to a better rated policy. Opting for a car with a smaller engine, building up your no-claims discount and paying a higher voluntary excess can all help you make savings. Ultimately, driving responsibly and shopping smartly are your best tools for reducing the cost of your cover."

FAQs about car insurance for students

There are three main types:

  • Fully comprehensive – The highest level of protection. You will be covered for damage to your and someone else’s car. You’ll also be insured if your vehicle is stolen or suffers fire damage.
  • Third-party, fire and theft – You will only be covered for damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle or property, or if your car is stolen or damaged by fire. You will not be insured for other accidental damage to your car.
  • Third-party only – You will only be covered for damage to someone else’s car or property.

Even though fully comprehensive offers the most robust protection, it can actually work out the cheapest. But the most important thing is for you to figure out what level of insurance is going to suit you and your needs.

Yes, we can help you find student van insurance, covering a wide variety of makes and models.

Yes. The registered address on your insurance must match that on your driving licence. If not, you could risk a fine and invalidating your policy so, if you’re moving to a new student address, you’ll need to notify your car insurance provider and apply to the DVLA to change the details on your licence. This can be done free of charge.

As a young driver or a student, your previous car insurance may have been as a named driver on your parents’ policy. This is a good short-term option if you’re living at home and only using the vehicle occasionally. If you’re a student living away from home, though, your car insurance needs to reflect that you are the main driver. Pretending otherwise is known as ‘fronting’ and is essentially a type of fraud that could land you with a criminal record.
